Urgent Chrome Security Update: What You Need to Do Right Now
If you use Google Chrome on your computer, this is an important reminder to update it right away.
Google has released multiple important Chrome security updates, including emergency fixes for serious vulnerabilities. While this does not mean everyone’s passwords were publicly exposed, it does mean that using an outdated version of Chrome can put your saved passwords, personal information, and online accounts at greater risk.
Some of these recent flaws were serious enough that security researchers and Google urged users to update immediately. The good news is that checking and updating Chrome usually takes less than a minute.
How to Update Google Chrome
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click the three dots in the top-right corner.
- Go to Help > About Google Chrome.
- Chrome will automatically check for updates and install the latest version.
- Click Relaunch when prompted.
You can also type this directly into the address bar:
chrome://settings/help
Run Chrome’s Password Checkup
After updating Chrome, it is a good idea to check whether any saved passwords may have been compromised, reused, or are too weak.
- Open Chrome.
- Click the three dots in the top-right corner.
- Go to Passwords and autofill > Google Password Manager.
- Click Checkup.
If Chrome flags any passwords, change them immediately.
What Passwords Should You Change First?
If any compromised or weak passwords are found, start with the most important accounts:
- Email accounts
- Banking and credit card accounts
- Shopping accounts
- Social media accounts
- Any account that stores sensitive personal or business information
Extra Steps to Protect Yourself
- Turn on two-factor authentication whenever possible.
- Do not click suspicious links in emails, texts, or pop-ups.
- Avoid saving sensitive passwords in an outdated or unprotected browser.
- Make sure Chrome automatic updates are enabled.
Why This Matters
Cybercriminals often take advantage of browser flaws before people realize an update is available. A simple Chrome update can close those security holes and help protect your passwords and personal data.
It is a small step that can prevent a very big problem later.
